West Wallsend Colliery is an underground coal mining operation located in the Newcastle Coalfields near Lake Macquarie.

Welcome to West Wallsend Underground

Coal mining has now been completed at West Wallsend Underground. The last tonne of coal was mined in May 2016 at the West Wallsend Underground after the mine first opened in 1969. Over the life of the mine a total of 80,272,623 tonnes of coal were mined mainly by longwall mining techniques, with some 887 people working at the mine over those years.

Coal washing at the Macquarie Coal Preparation Plant has also been completed with the remaining stockpiled coal progressively being loaded onto trains to be transported to customers over the coming months.

The vast majority of the workforce has finished up with some personnel remaining on site to undertake ongoing environmental management activities and commence the progressive mine closure activities.
